Yoga Pathways
At Santosha Yoga, regular classes provide the foundation for practice. Our Yoga Pathways build on that foundation by giving students the opportunity to explore particular aspects of Yoga in more depth.
Each pathway focuses on a practical area of Yoga and introduces traditional concepts, practices and ways of working that can be applied both in class and in everyday life. They are not separate styles of Yoga, but different directions through the same broader tradition.
You can choose a pathway according to what is useful or interesting to you, while continuing to attend your regular class.
Establishing a Home Practice
This pathway is for anyone who would like to practise more regularly at home, whether that means five minutes in the morning, a short practice several times a week, or gradually developing a longer personal practice.
The emphasis is on making practice realistic and repeatable.
Rather than trying to create the perfect routine, the aim is to establish a simple practice that can continue through the changing circumstances of everyday life.
Establishing a Home Practice
The Inner Silence pathway introduces practices that gradually turn attention inward.
A central practice is Antar Mouna, a traditional meditation practice associated with pratyahara — the process of becoming less automatically drawn into external stimulation, thoughts and reactions.
The aim is not to force the mind to become quiet. Instead, we learn to observe thoughts, sensations and experiences with greater awareness and less need to immediately react to them.
Establishing a Home Practice
Bhakti Yoga explores the expressive and devotional dimensions of Yoga.
One of its most accessible practices is Kirtan, the singing and repetition of mantra, often accompanied by harmonium and simple rhythm. No singing experience is required. The emphasis is not on performance, but on participation, repetition, listening and the shared experience of sound.
This pathway provides a different way of approaching Yoga — one that works through voice, feeling, rhythm and collective practice.
Developing Your Practice
Other pathways may focus on refining asana, pranayama, relaxation and meditation practices, exploring yogic attitudes and principles, or developing a more complete personal sadhana , a regular and intentional Yoga practice.
The pathways are designed to remain practical. Traditional terms and ideas are introduced where they help us understand what we are doing, but the emphasis remains on experience.
There is no need to complete every pathway or follow them in a particular order.
For most students, the starting point remains simple: attend regularly, practise what you have learned, notice the effects, and gradually explore the aspects of Yoga that become most relevant to you.
In this way, Yoga becomes less about completing a course and more about developing a practice that can continue to grow over time.
